Dandong is a city in China's Liaoning Province on the river that borders North Korea. I went there for the May Day holiday. You can read my reviews (for Dandong and elsewhere) and see more photos on the Tripadvisor at https://www.tripadvisor.com/members-reviews/ChanRoberts.
My inexpensive hotel was just a short walk from the park along the river. From the park you can look across the river and see North Korea. There is also a bridge crossing between China and North Korea next to another bridge that stops practically in the middle of the river (which will give you a closer view of North Korea), and the second bridge is accessible from the park.
My first day was a day of exploring the local area. Near my hotel is a small street that has a number of North Korean shops. The second day was spent taking a train to Dongguang, where I was able to get a boat to Dalu Island in the Yellow Sea. I took a hover boat back from the island.
In addition to the border area, there are other things to see if you're willing to venture out. You can find a list of things to do on Tripadvisor. I took a taxi to a couple of shopping areas on Tripadvisor's list, for which Tripadvisor didn't have photos - I have since remedied that issue by taking and submitting photos. See Tripadvisor's list of things to do at: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions.
Dandong is a nice little place from which to see North Korea without actually going to North Korea.
